Webinar tool: ZOOM

A webinar is a
live web-based video conference or lecture that uses the internet to connect
the speaker and audience. Hosts can show themselves speaking, switch to their
computer screens for PPT or demonstrations, and even invite guests from other
locations to co-host the webinar with them. There are also interactive features
that the audience can use to ask questions and chat with host. Many people who
host webinars include Q&A sessions at the end to answer viewers' questions.
After my second
peer teaching, I wanted to have a brief discussion about how to improve the
class with my mentor Cliff. However, the time is limited, and the weather is
bad, so Cliff invited me to use Zoom, which is an interesting tool like skype
to chat with each other. From this experience I knew more about this webinar
tool.
To get started
with Zoom, first create an account. A free account allows you to hold meetings
that last up to 40 minutes with a maximum of 25 participants. Send the
invitation to your participants or students via email and they will be able to
join you using any browser or an app on their mobile device. Follow these
instructions on how to get started with Zoom, or learn more about the advanced
features here.
During my using
time, Zoom is not as sophisticated as Blackboard Collaborate. It doesn’t have
polling features and cannot create breakout rooms. However, it does allow
participants to raise their hands, participate via audio, video and text as
well as share their screens. What’s more, it includes remote control. Once Cliff
had a problem in choosing the right PPT, so he asked me to help him remotely. Also,
the host can mute and unmute participants, lock the meeting, create groups,
send invitations, take screenshots, and send files during a meeting.
Benefits of Zoom online video conference system
Cost Saving:
Actually, this is not very prominent in education, but it could
reduce some cost if there are many students from all over the world to share their
ideas. Webinar is a kind of alternative to save money rather than go to the
real conference room.
Time
Saving: Video conferencing or lecturing consumes only the required
time for the meeting.
Give Better
Opportunity Of E-Learning: Distance education program can be concluded through video
conference. E.g. a teacher who is sitting in China and the student who is
located in the UK can’t meet every day possibly whereas through videocall they
can exchange ideas and educational perspective.
Zoom also has a unique functionality that allows users to record their
virtual meetings in MP4 and M4A video formats which is possible both through
the web or mobile devices. This cloud and local recording of meetings or
lectures makes it easier for users to keep their video clips for future
reference. So you don’t need a third party software to record the video any more!
Limitations of Zoom
